Scene : Biology Lab
Time : 12 noon ( right after lunch break )
Experiment : To dissect a frog and identify its internal organs.
It was an amazing experience!! We all were so excited ! Well, atleast most of us were ‘coz some just wanted to get out of lab ( thinking they would puke off all the food that they’d had just a few minutes ago. )
It was so different from fish dissection. First we did earthworm dissection ( it wasn’t that exciting ‘coz it was to small and the only thing we could see was pharynx and clitellum…err…its reproductive part ).
The toad was first washed in distilled water and anaesthetized with chloroform. The four appendages were nailed on the wooden plank and the rest was ….just look at the photos… ( Yes, my Biology teacher is really sweet and allowed me to take pictures ! Yay ! )
Say Hello to Mr.Toad !!
Its skin was damn rough…( see how we’ve nailed its legs )
First, the Digestive system was removed, then the liver, fat bodies, tissues and other organs.
The most amazing part of all was that the toads heart was beating even when we were dissecting it ! We could see its heart moving up and down till we cut out the last organ. To see the heart beat was like witnessing Life. ( Literally ) When the last organ was removed, the heart slowly stopped beating. The toad was dead – and – empty.
These are all its internal organs…
Remembering the ever green, ever jumping mr.Toad. What a great loss to the Eco-System. ( gulp! )
Please Note : I do not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings. Any cries or sadness are deeply regretted.
All the photos belong to me and nobody else … eerrrr….and leave comments please, I’m very very curious to know how you’ll react to this post. Very curious.

huh.. your seem to be really excited
and btw nice pics..
do you get to dissect??
10 April, 2008 at 6:46 pm
dissect yourself i mean..
11 April, 2008 at 1:12 am
When I was in class 12, we had to dissect a frog too, but I raised such a huge issue out of it and took my parents to the principal and threatened to sue them, and finally they made us dissect a cockroach instead!!
I’m strictly against vivisection of any sort… But, on the other hand, you now have one privilege over most other people – you can see a Thestral, while other can’t..!!
(I do hope you know what a Thestral is. Ref: Harry Potter) lol…
11 April, 2008 at 2:28 am
ewwww….gross…
kewl pics though!!!:D
11 April, 2008 at 7:16 am
hm..interesting ..unfortunately we never had such things [frog dissection] when we were in puc….guess what i still remember playing catch -catch with a human heart after body dissection in anatomy in 1st year mbbs!!!…lol
11 April, 2008 at 8:15 am
ewww….even gross!!!!
“playin’ catch catch with HUMAN HEART”!!!!
yuck!!!!
11 April, 2008 at 10:22 am
@ Srividya : Come on !! Huh….forget it….
@ Sandeep : Yeah, we had 3 toads…the first one our teacher did and the other two were dissected by us….some 3 guys ran away ‘coz they couldn’t take it any more and stuff….I actually started the dissection of the 2nd one…:P
@ Yaake : No wayz !! Omg !! You shouldn’t have done that….come on ! Huh !!!
A Thestral is an unusual type of winged horse, invisible to those who have not witnessed death. Thestrals are considered highly unlucky by most wizards and, to those who have seen death, appear as carnivorous, skeletal horses with reptilian features.
@ Vivek : Hahahahaa….thanks !!
@ Brocasarea : OMG !! SHIT !! You didn’t…………………………………
……………………/*omg omg*\
@ Vivek : I swear !! Human Heart !! No ways !!
11 April, 2008 at 10:23 am
@ Brocasarea : You had Human Dissection in the first year itself ??! I thought you’d have it somewhere in the middle of your term….MBBS…whoaa !!
11 April, 2008 at 11:09 am
hey, these pics look cool with d comments………… i cant believe that i actually saw u ppl kill that toad … i thot i wld puke or something….
)
but it wasnt that bad after all (but i still feel algorithms n programs r better……
atleast i don hv to witness a murder!
but seriously, i too enjoyed seeing the heart beat!!!
i bet i’ll never 4get this dissection throughout my life!!!
11 April, 2008 at 11:23 am
hey!!!!!!!!AWESOME!!!!!!!! the pics look much cooler on d comp…i really luved the dissection…sad we cant have one more…the heart beat fwas AWESOME….
11 April, 2008 at 11:24 am
*was
11 April, 2008 at 11:31 am
Those are some really nice pictures there. I think this is cool. I guess you will have to draw all this in your record. Thats the worst part of Biology
11 April, 2008 at 11:32 am
Pretty much the reason I never even thought about taking Medical. I can’t do dissection. Hell, I can’t even see a cockroach or an earthworm from that close.
And the pictures are well..graphic. Not exactly for the faint of heart.
*faints*
11 April, 2008 at 11:38 am
Priya,
Thank god I have a slow net connection here, otherwise I’d have seen the pics before reading the text and vomited!!!
11 April, 2008 at 11:38 am
@ Shruthi : You did Shruthi !! I too, will never forget this dissection ever !! Ma’am even said that now we’d specialised in frog dissection ‘coz we did the 2nd one so well ! Yay !!
@ Sindhu : Thanks !! The heart beat ! Whoa !! Did you realize when it stopped ? I never did !!
@ Abhishek : Nope !! We don’t have to draw this in our record !! Buhahaa !! So its still COOL eh ?? *grin*
@ Ish : Huh ?? Really ?? Dude, your really different ! All the guys in my class trouble the girls by picking up dead/alive cockroaches.
11 April, 2008 at 11:41 am
@ Yaju : Hey ! Long time !! You don’t blog these days ??
About the Dissection….Huh !! I really can’t believe the pics made so many of you vomit.
You know, before doing the dissection, we’ll had thought the same thing. But we didn’t feel anything during the process. Nothing at all.
11 April, 2008 at 11:46 am
same here….eventhough a not a mbbs student,i didnt feel like vomiting…
wonder why???
11 April, 2008 at 11:51 am
^^
Lol.
Aah !! *wonder*
One of my friends even called me a cold blodded murderer. After that I was like
Beat that !
11 April, 2008 at 12:02 pm
lolz…true…i thought for dissection, they give only dead animals….never thought that they would give live ones!!
11 April, 2008 at 1:35 pm
reaching out for a piece of lime
11 April, 2008 at 2:08 pm
EEK!
When I was beginning +1, I was thinking about taking up biology as well.
But now I am 101% gawddamn sure I don’t want all that!
Great post though, and it seems your school’s got some good infrastructure!
And BTW, they let you take a camera to school?!?
11 April, 2008 at 2:12 pm
One of the coollest posts ever!!
I would have loved to put this on my blog, but you were faster
Grrrrr…….
The best part was when we all massecered the other toad!!
Supremely awesome..
11 April, 2008 at 2:13 pm
ewww…..massacred the other toad???
temme abt it!!!
11 April, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Gee, no, I’d be the first person to run out of the class if a cockroach was discovered. I’m really insect un-friendly in any case. The only insects I’m not scared of are ants. At one point of time I used to sleep with a bedsheet on me even in summers because of the fear of “flying” cockroaches. I can’t kill one even if you ask me to do that today.
12 April, 2008 at 9:32 am
@ Vivek – Yeah, they give LIVE frogs and toads for dissection. You need to make them unconscious be subjecting them to chloroform. Thats the reason why we could actually see the heart beat till we cut the last artery ! It was really like witnessing LIFE.
( but then it died, so thats a different thing )
@ Meghana : Lime ? :O
@ Raghav : If you really like Biology, then you should’nt quit it just because of it. Nobody will force you to dissect a frog ! You can do it only if YOU want to.
Yeah, Our schools got a good infrastructure ! You bet !!
Usually they don’t let us take a cam and all that but THIS is different ! You don’t go around cutting frogs into pieces everyday !!
@ Prarthana : Lolz, I’ve still many different pictures of me and you dissecting it, you can still post it in your blog !
@ Vivek : Yeah, we were allowed to dissect the 2nd toad, so as soon as the 1st one was done, 4-5 of us started with the 2nd one. I was into starting it, then other person seperated the digestive system and 1 guy was totally into taking its eye balls out. He even managed to take out its lens !
@ Ish : Rofl !! You know…cockroaches are the only creatures that can survive a nuclear blast. So, your fear for them is completely understandable
12 April, 2008 at 9:59 am
You bet. I’m pretty sure even Bush is shit scared of them. Who knows they might creep up from somewhere behind Bush’s ghar ki bush?
12 April, 2008 at 10:00 am
oh shit!.. .tat thing is freaky…!!!! but actually.. sad..
12 April, 2008 at 10:12 am
@ Ish : Buhahahaha !! Bush would rather keep monkeys @ his place than cockroaches.
@ Akshay : hmmmmm…….yeah its freaky ! But sad….hmmmmmm………
12 April, 2008 at 12:56 pm
ew.
*my reaction*
although i did go through the pics VERY fast. i’d been warned.
didn’t you puke? i wud have puked.
btw, you dissected a LIVE toad? it was ALIVE??? how horrid.
12 April, 2008 at 3:36 pm
I wont ever opt for bio ..if this is the case..i cant even look at those pics :-&
12 April, 2008 at 4:34 pm
i wish i had all this to do…its awesome fun to c all that n can understand even better whn u c stuff rather chumma study n vomit
hope i have some thing like that this yr…err..
12 April, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Na, if he’s sensible he wouldn’t. Who would want Andrew Symonds hiding somewhere in their house?
12 April, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Eeeewwwwww
12 April, 2008 at 6:42 pm
@ pry, u know u cld have taken a video of the disection, composed a song n cld have turned it into a death metal video…… it wld have rocked!!! lol!!!
remembered somethin.. when my cousin had to disect a frog ,the anasthesia was so less that it actually jumped out of the boardd with its heart poppin out!!!!!! talk abt crazy frogs!!!:)
13 April, 2008 at 12:54 am
oh…ok
my dad was a bio student too!!
think he also did dissection!
13 April, 2008 at 8:07 am
@ Nidhi : Hehe…No, I did not Puke ! I though I would, but once it all started, nothing actually happened. It was very exciting.
Yes, the Toad was ALIVE but unconscious. Thats why we could still see its heart beat even while dissecting it.
@ Allirekha : Biology isn’t just about disseecting frogs and cockroaches !! Come on ! And nobody will force you to do the dissection. You can just quit it !
Omg !! Am I really influencing people not to opt for Biology ‘coz of this Post ?? :O
@ Nikitha : Hehehe…I don’t think you’ll have it in your College this time ! Yeah, it’s fun !
@ Ish : Buhahahaahahahhahahahahhahahahahaaa !! Man, you’re on a roll !! Whats the Crash courses doing to you ??
@ Vinod : LOL
13 April, 2008 at 8:10 am
@ Varsha : OMG !! Thats the craziest thing I’ve ever heard !! Death Metal video !! ROLF ! Someone did take a video of the heart beat actually…:D
Yeah, our teacher said that too. If the chloroform is less, then the frog may come to conscious any minute. It would be fun if it just jumped around the Biology lab with half of it open !
( gulp! people !! Don’t bash me for saying this !! )
@ Vivek : oh !! Actually some 10 years back itseems they had even rat dissection and stuff….
13 April, 2008 at 9:18 am
Very nice, you seem to be an enthusiastic student, given the number I work with who are not quite so keen, shall we say?, it’s good to see.
Good luck with your studies.
13 April, 2008 at 11:15 am
euuuuu how about a disclaimer on top!
reminds me of my biology days … i remember buying all the tools for dissection but not the actual event – Did i faint!?
13 April, 2008 at 12:30 pm
@ Literarydeadkittens : Yeah, I’m very Enthusiastic ! Geeeee
Thanks a Lot !!!
@ Andback : Hey ! Thanks a Lot for the idea !! I put it up !!
Heheheee…How can you not remember the Dissection ?! :O Maybe you did FAINT then !!!
Many guys in my own class wanted to faint. They rather chose not to witness it @ all
13 April, 2008 at 1:04 pm
my dad had dissected frogs, garden lizards, fishes, sharks, cockroaches, etc etc etc!!
13 April, 2008 at 1:22 pm
yuk, yuk….
No thanks, I’m skipping the videos.
14 April, 2008 at 9:06 am
who said i cant do wat u did still..wil catch a frog n dissect it myself
14 April, 2008 at 10:15 am
I don’t know! It certainly does seem to be making my brain go plonk!
Maybe you can dissect me and find out the problem. But hey, I don’t want the pictures of my organs splashed all over your blog.
14 April, 2008 at 2:54 pm
i swear if it weren’t for SAW i would have puked the big ice cream sundae, milk shake and the coffee and the sambar vadai and the pav bhaji i just had!
btw next is it a human???
14 April, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Finally Priya!! I saw your post !! I completely agree with shruti…I never thought i could live through a frog dissection expt!! But actually speaking…I will keep it in my memory forever as one moment when i overcame my fears!!! And ya…Congrats….coz i agree with shylaja mam tht u guys have mastered dissection…(U see i was standing right there when you stated tearing open the frog’s skin!!)…
15 April, 2008 at 4:12 am
@ Vivek : Omg !! Thats really Cool !!
@ Free Video : Geeeee !
@ Nikitha : Aaah !! That would really be awesome !! You just catch a frog near your house, nail it to a wooden plank and dissect it !! Wow !!
@ Ish : Hehehee !! Thats an amazing idea !! Then, all your readers would actually be able to see YOU ‘n THE PARTS through my Blog !! Hahaha….You have a lot of female fans too…I’ve noticed.
@ Vishesh : Human ? Need to wait a long time for that to happen. I don’t think I’ll get a Medical seat and all…I may just end up dissecting a random human after a few years then….Eeeeewwww !!! Noooo Ways !!
Big ice cream sundae, milk shake, coffee, sambar vadai and the pav bhaji …Hmmm…Quite a Menu there !!
@ Madhumitha : Thanks for visiting !! And yeah, it must have been quite an experience for you. I can understand completely.
15 April, 2008 at 1:45 pm
LOL, Me ‘n’ The Parts. And I’ll be seeing that on your blog too from the heavenly internet connection. Or the hellily internet connection depending on where I go.
Yes, I have a lot of female fans. And I’ve got quite a few people telling me that these days. Achchi baat hai na?
I’ve got guy fans too btw, but they’re the sharmila kind. Bechaare sharma jaate hain ladkiyon ke comments dekhkar. And all of them will collectively help you dissect me if they read this.
15 April, 2008 at 3:29 pm
@priya
u call tht cool????eeewww…..yuck
15 April, 2008 at 10:02 pm
-1 for the chinese!
16 April, 2008 at 1:09 pm
God bless soul of the toad. Salute.
Thank god I never took biology!! Computers believe in non-violence.
16 April, 2008 at 1:18 pm
@Priya
Thanks!! Yeah I haven’t blogged as of late, and am thinking of posting something that will make someone else vomit as well!
I wanted to be a doctor, but after I read about the dissections part I shifted gears to non-medical. Dissecting a motherboard is much easier, and less painful.
16 April, 2008 at 2:22 pm
@ Ish : Heavenly Internet connection 24*7 ??!! Then we’d all gladly die !!

Congrats for the huge female fan following !!
About the guys….I’m sure they’d read your stuff to gain some inspiration ! *wink*
@ Vivek :
@ Arun : ….errrrrr…………
@ Suda : Computers ? Non-violence ? Hmm….not totally agree with that.
You see, in Biology, you do all this stuff just so that you may cure something or find a solution to some problem. This is to improve human race for better living.
And yeah, may the toads rest in peace !
@ Yaju : Hey ! Doing medical is not all about dissecting organisms you know…
About dissecting a mother board….hehehe somewhat true !!
Waiting for a new post on your blog !
16 April, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Congrats, U are all set to be a psycho killer….cutting it open and hoping that it wud wake up and jump around!!! I wouldn’t want you to be my doctor and if you end up as one…no dissection stuff from thee!!! Thanks
I am generally a strong hearted person…the photos will haunt me…. the Return of the Toad!!
U killed one of the creatures that eat up disgusting flies and mosquitoes. Dissect a mosquito and see if you can eliminate the race, now that would be something !!!
16 April, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Cool pics!!! So u crucified the frog, huh?…….like u worship it??…….Nice blog!!!
17 April, 2008 at 1:40 am
why a mosquito???how about a red ant???try it out!!!
17 April, 2008 at 4:10 am
@Priya You got my name wrong, its Suda nicked from real name Sudarshan.
And even I agree that you are right about biology and stuff, I will leave you guys to do it.
17 April, 2008 at 11:35 am
@ Sharath : ” Return of the Toad!! ” haha…thats a good one ! Mosquites ? :O
I WISH…….
@ Kaddu : Thanks a lot !! Yeah, we did Crucify the toad !
@ Vivek : “BUH”…..now all of you go ahead and start making sarcastic comments !! “buh”….
@ Suda : Hey ! I’m really sorry about that ! Will correct it…
See !! Thank you so much !! Your the first person supporting me on this issue !! Cheers !
17 April, 2008 at 12:22 pm
After reading your disclaimer, I scrolled down fast
17 April, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Hey I remember my sister doing that, she had a dissection box, which I liked to see and it was very handy. When I couldn’t find any other scissors I took it from this box
18 April, 2008 at 2:21 pm
no am not….
am juz making the atmosphere krazy!!!
18 April, 2008 at 3:05 pm
@ Abhishek : I’m glad I put it up !
Eeeeks !! You used scissors that were used for dissetion ? For what :O
@ Vivek : Yaaay !! Crazier the Better !!
19 April, 2008 at 4:09 am
real late reply,
lime helps me stop d “look at me puke” feeling ! :0
19 April, 2008 at 11:49 am
this was the first blog i read of this kind
..amazing being a non medical student it was quite interesting to see this thing.. i had heard abt these things but never thought i would ever see it that too on a blog
u wont beleive i was having a plate of maggi in my hand while reading this post
21 April, 2008 at 5:03 pm
When I dissected my first mouse(yup it wasn’t a toad for me), I took out the heart and took it home in a small box, to show it to my mom. You can imagine the look on her face.
In my final practicals, I got a lady mouse to dissect, and when I opened her, I found that she was pregnant with 7 children.
22 April, 2008 at 2:16 am
what???pregnant mouse??
23 April, 2008 at 9:11 am
and i dunno why…everytime i see a frog in the tv i visualise these photos!!!
23 April, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Cool!! Amazing pics……yeah slightly gruesome but still interesting……i tried 2 get into t lab 2 watch t dissection bt that dumb Kulprakash wouldnt let me in…!!!
23 April, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Hey,
Nice pix… tho I was initially grossed and very upset at the idea of cutting live animals!
But then I loved Bio, so I had to do this and many more… We dissected toads, baby sharks, earthworms, leeches, cockroaches, snails, pigeons and i bet i m forgetting some more! (the plurals of each animal are intentional, cuz we cut them a ltot of timess!)
In fact, like u said, we mastered it after the first couple times, and labs without dissections got boring there after… worst tho’ was dissecting a cockroach! (ew, just the thought of touching a cockroach)… and we had several cases where the cockroaches recovered from anesthesia while they were being cut open! phew… that was BAD! and yucky… and gross and everything else…
but nonethelss, it was good to read ur article… sometimes things like these help in reviving memories too, like this one just did to me!
23 April, 2008 at 8:21 pm
forgot to write… good work!
Cheers!

@ Meghana :: Ohh I see !! Thats why !!
@ Arvind : Hey, thanks a lot man !! Being a non-medical student you experienced this through this post !! I’m glad !!
What happened to the Maggie then ?? Was it safe inside or did it come out ??
@ Amit : Eeeeeks !! You took the heart out and showed it to your mom ?? Whoaa.
Pregnant with 7 children ?? Reallllly ?? Eeeeeksss REALLY !!
@ Vivek :
@ Shourav : Sad….its seeing it live that makes it more interesting.
@ Shiwani : Toads, baby sharks, earthworms, leeches, cockroaches, snails, pigeons ?? This must be really long time back !!! We don’t even have all this in our syllabus now !
Atleast the cockroaches recovered from anesthesia while they were being cut open. Imagine what would have happened if it was a frog !! LOL !!
Thanks a Lot !!
2 May, 2008 at 7:30 pm
YUCK!
3 May, 2008 at 3:38 am
it was a few years ago… yes indeed, 3-5 actually, not that long!! good old days!!
thank God the frogs dint loose the anesthesia…
5 May, 2008 at 3:06 pm
so you had frog legs for dessert … hmm yummy
5 May, 2008 at 3:11 pm
@ Sneezy Melon :
@ Shiwuz : Oh !! Okay !
@ Ankur : Yeah, Frogs legs with a tinge of Earthworm’s sqashed muscle with vinegar and lime !
It was delicious !
5 May, 2008 at 5:03 pm
so i guess u r not the kind of girl who would yell and stand on the chairs the moment they see a cockroach/lizard/rat
6 May, 2008 at 7:08 am
@priya
u 4got to add the blood of mosquito as a sub for water!!
6 May, 2008 at 2:11 pm
@ Ankur: Nay, thats not me.
@ Vivek : Duh-uh !! Lol, thanks for making that image complete by the way!
6 May, 2008 at 3:06 pm
no it was safe…i am not that weak hearted …
i enjoyed my maggie as usual…
7 May, 2008 at 11:57 am
Nice work.. a far cry from all the “animals have feelings too” meneka-wannabe naysayers. I say cut ‘em up, it’s all for science.
8 May, 2008 at 6:41 pm
one more life in the name of sciene and experiment
anyway we will get it on our face someday, what goes around comes around.
sorry to say but its indeed not cool
8 May, 2008 at 10:50 pm
YUCK AGAIN! I only saw the pics last time. This time I read the post. How could you dissect it while its heart was still beating?! YUCK YUCK! :S
13 June, 2008 at 8:21 am
Ooohhh I’d dissected a rat instead of a frog and its been only since last 2 years that I have forgot the feel of its skin n internal view..One of my classmates had fainted!! But i was good at dissection…which was good for my lab partner who hated bio!!
20 June, 2008 at 8:19 am
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thats so freaky , how the hell do u disect frogs wivout gloves!!!!!!!!!! n poor animals, ok i hate frogs , kill them , is there anyways i can get its intestines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hahahahhahahahahahahaha jus kiddin cool, n hi priya!!!!!!!!
11 September, 2008 at 3:25 pm

how poor biology class you have!!
save the frogs..

25 December, 2008 at 12:04 pm
@ Arvind – Haha! Good for you!!
@ Mustafa – !!
@ T – Okayy…chill…
@ Sneezy Melon – As I said, it was unconscious due to chloroform…
@ Reema – Dissecting a rat is horrible!! Actually, its not allowed anywhere now due to plague and diseases…
And its hairy :-\
You were good at it?! LOL!! Good for you!!
@ Krishant – Its not that freaky. And why on earth would you need its intestines??
Frogs help balance eco-system! Don’t hate them!!
@ Jenlia – Bah. Its for science you know. How can you operate a person if you don’t know his body? :-/ Its something like that.
@ Flakey –
Hope your expt went well…
@ Shane – Haha. Chill.
@ SB – Yay. Finally!! =)
3 March, 2009 at 10:24 pm
i just finish my dissection yesterday. and gosh. poor frog. it keeps on struggling. waah^^
30 March, 2009 at 4:53 am
Ah… This looks so enticing. I am frustrated as to why I didn’t take up bio. It was worth it just for this experience, you know.
I would have taken all the frogs and cooked one grand Frog Biryani for me and my friends. If it worked, i would open a restaurant… and then a chain of restaurants and then after a few years I will be the pioneer of Frog Foods in the world. What an Idea, sirjee.
BTW, brocasarea… i have become your fan after reading what you did with the human heart… Totally awesome man…
Freak. I can’t stop admiring… I thought like I was the guy with the freakiest sense of adventure but you my friend have outclassed me in every department. Please accept my humble thanks. I now know that there are skies yet for me to conquer.

Just did this in class last week. Was mortified but got through it somehow. Couldn’t stop thinkng about it all day and the next. I was looking for an answer to why the heart was till beating. Thanks for the info. Very helpful!
